Why now
The centre is running out of money, power and permission. The edge is ready.
Six facts, each with its source and the date it was read. If one changes, this page changes.
- $725B
The centre has never been this expensive.
The four largest clouds plan about $725 billion of capital spending in 2026, up 77% on a record 2025, roughly three quarters of it AI infrastructure. Every dollar of it is a data centre someone will rent back to you.

The power is not there.
Data centres used about 485 TWh of electricity in 2025 and approach 950 TWh by 2030 in the IEA's base case. Grid connection queues in many US markets run about five years; several legacy hubs have no capacity left for new large sites.

The public is saying no.
Opponents blocked or delayed at least 75 data centre projects worth about $130 billion in the first quarter of 2026, the most since tracking began, with 833 active opposition groups across 49 states. A Gallup poll found 70% of Americans would oppose a data centre in their own community.

The models are open, and they are good.
Since January 2026 the best open-weight models trail the best closed ones by an average of four months, down from six to ten months a year earlier. April closed the gap to single digits on the main index. The intelligence is no longer locked in the centre.

The hardware is already under the desk.
A consumer card with 32 GB of memory runs a 70B-class model; a 128 GB Mac runs a 120B one. Millions of these machines sit idle most of the day. Rutli's own two founding machines already route between themselves.

Gamers are paying for the data centres' memory.
AI data centres are forecast to take up to 70% of the world's memory output in 2026, and blended DRAM contract prices rose about 80% in one quarter. An RTX 5090 with a $1,999 list price sells for $4,699 on the street in September 2026. Gamers feel abandoned for AI. The same cards, on Rutli, take work back from that economy.
